Do American citizens really have a right to a speedy and fair trial? Does this right extend equally to both the capitalist class and the multi-racial working class? Plea bargaining is a common practice in our criminal justice system which results in very few criminal defendants ever actually standing trial. Socialists must critically explore the fundamental precepts of existing legal structures and how they operate to further exploitation and systemic oppression. Join Louisville DSA’s socialist night school program for a lecture from and discussion with local attorney, author, and law professor Dan Canon. Dan is the author of the recently published book, Pleading Out, which illustrates the harsh realities of plea bargaining and how the practice has resulted in a permanent criminal class.
