This April, the mayor’s office will hand over a “draft” of the 2025–26 budget to Louisville Metro Council, who will most likely pass it with little to no changes. Before the budget is passed, there will be a single community budget hearing for the working people of Louisville to give feedback.
This process is undemocratic, and the people of Louisville deserve better.
Where do all OUR tax dollars go?
Previous Metro Council budgets have failed the people. Nearly HALF of the $1.1 billion 2024–25 budget funded police spending despite LMPD being under investigation at the time for workplace sexual misconduct allegations, ultimately resulting in the LMPD chief’s resignation.
What can the people do about it?
This spring, the People’s Budget Campaign will host public town halls to draft a truly participatory amendment to the Metro budget by democratic vote to be presented to Metro Council.
Together, we can make a powerful statement and force Metro Council to allocate more tax dollars toward public services.
What could a People’s Budget look like?
Policing does not make us safer, but investing in people and public goods does. The public programs that help communities to thrive cannot be found in jails. Louisville Metro Council must serve the collective good by investing our tax dollars into our community. The People’s Budget aims to show them how.
Potential People’s Budget measures that would actually foster a safer Louisville might include:
Affordable housing and eviction prevention that improves quality of life and financial stability.
Job training and education that give people access to living-wage jobs and increased financial security.
Reliable and robust public transit that ensures freedom of mobility for workers, students, the elderly, and differently abled.
Mental health care and substance abuse treatment that fight homelessness in our city and the opioid epidemic.
Strengthened environmental protections that combat climate change and will tackle our “urban heat island.”
Fully funded public schools that reject the false promise of “school choice” which funnels money to private schools that don’t need it.
Municipal grocery stores that prioritize easy access to fresh, healthy food over corporate profits.
